The HEAR Foundation made the list of Top-Rated Women’s Empowerment Nonprofits! The list compiled by GreatNonprofits and GuideStar identifies top-rated nonprofits that focus on women’s issues. We are recognized on this list for the Hijas program and our other work to improve the lives of the girls at the Casa Hogar Marta & Maria orphanage in Jalapa, Guatemala. Growing Home

Growing Home’s mission is to operate, promote and demonstrate the use of organic agriculture as a vehicle for job training, employment, and community development. Growing Home operates a transitional job training program, and a social enterprise business through its Wood Street Urban Farm, Su Casa Market Garden, and Les Brown Memorial Farm. HEAR’s current grant supports Growing Home’s community outreach efforts focusing on health and nutrition to the Englewood and greater Chicago-land communities.

American Theater Company (ATC)

HEAR is providing $1,000 college scholarships to the two 2010 recipients of American Theater Company’s “American Dream Award,” Luceli Hernandez and Yazmin Ramos. Both will be completing 8th grade this year and are participants in ATC’s Chicago Chronicle program. In this program Chicago Public Schools students team up with professional playwrights to create a play about the teens’ lives based on interviews with their school, families, and community. The work is presented in a staged reading by professional actors at ATC’s theater.

Construction at Nicolasa Cruz National Hospital

In 2007, HEAR funded the construction of a dormitory and a supply storage room at the national hospital in Jalapa. These spaces are used for medical teams and groups that assist at the hospital.

Performing Arts Scholarship

In 2007, HEAR extended a full tuition scholarship to Alexandrea Tocco (Cape Coral, FL), singer and actress, to attend Interlochen Academy of the Arts, a specialized arts school in Michigan. After completing the program there, she decided to attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where she currently pursues a Bachelors in Fine Arts.
